    How to Provide Genius Answers!

A situational (behavioral) based pharmaceutical sales interview requires a great deal of preparation and practice. By utilizing the STAR format, you'll provide complete, logical and concrete examples that will wow the hiring manager!

The basic components of the STAR format? Here's the scoop:

  • Situation: What was the situation you found yourself in? Provide neccessary background information.
  • Task: What was the specific task you had to achieve? What was the goal?
  • Action: What action did you take? How did you create the solution and what did you do?
  • Result: What was the result of your action? What happened?

Warning...Keep in mind the following points:

  • Although you may be able to provide many examples for a specific skill, make sure to choose the example that most clearly illustrates your possession of the skill.
  • Limit rambling and tangents...stick to the STAR format and you'll craft concise, logical answers.
  • Listen carefully to each pharmaceutical sales interview question. If you don't understand the question, rephrase and ask for clarification.

    Pharmaceutical Sales Interview Questions:
    How to Prepare...

  • First, make a list of the essential skills and abilities required in pharmaceutical sales jobs.

  • For every skill/quality listed in step 1, devise a STAR response - a real life example illustrating how you possess the skill/ability in the STAR format. Write down the best example for every skill/quality on your list.

  • Rehearse your answers until your delivery is smooth and confident.

  • Stage a "mock interview" with a friend or family member. Ask your "mock interviewer" to listen for clarity and watch your non-verbal communication.

    Speaking of non-verbal communication...that's next!

The Importance of Good Non-Verbal Cues in a Pharmaceutical Sales Interview:

Often, what you don't say is more important that what you do say. That's why it's essential to watch those non-verbal "vibes" you're giving off during the pharmaceutical sales interview. The vibes you want to send should say, "I'm confident and at-ease, but excited about the opportunity before me".

How are you going to do that? By doing what we say, of course!

  • Introduction: Greet the Interviewer by name with a smile and a firm handshake.
  • Dress Professionally: Conservative (navy, blue, or black) business suits are best for both men and women. Carry a dark leather briefcase or portfolio. You also need a professional hairstyle, polished shoes, and a minimum of cologne/jewelry.
  • Maintain good eye contact; no slouching in the seat: Lean forward slightly with arms falling loosely at your sides or in you lap to appear interested and engaged. Control all nervous habits - nail biting, drumming fingers, etc.
  • This is a "no-brainer", but hey...it's got to be said: Pay attention to your grooming details. This means fresh breath, clean fingernails, no gum, etc.
  • Remember that silence is sometimes golden: Don't try to fill every awkward silence. If you pause before answering a question, it enables you to better organize your thoughts and provide a concise answer to pharmaceutical sales interview questions.
