Pharmaceutical Sales Resumes - Where and How Do I Record My Ride-Along Experience?
January 31, 2006 17:52

Prior to gaining an interview, it's essential to experience a ride-along with a rep so that you'll know exactly what a pharmaceutical sales career is all about. And, by adding this experience to your resume, it shows that you've conducted research and you know exactly what you're getting yourself into. In effect, it qualifies you as a serious candidate!

Now, how to document this on pharmaceutical sales resumes? Here are some good tips for ya:

  • Utilize a title or heading to separate your ride-along from the rest of the resume. I like to use the "Field Experience" heading. Though I've seen others utilize the "Preceptorship" title, I think it's a poor choice of words. Why? Because a pharmaceutical sales "preceptorship" has historically referred to a pharma rep shadowing a doctor for a day (to better understand the prescribing habits of the doctor) and the doctor receiving a stipend for agreeing to the preceptorship. Therefore, utilizing "Preceptorship" as a heading for a ride-along is inaccurate and can reflect poorly on your knowledge of this career.
  • Make sure to place this section near the top of the resume where it will gain the attention of the hiring professional.
  • After the title/heading, explain exactly what you did and what you "took away" from the experience.

I know, I know, you want an example, right? Ok, here goes...
Field Experience: Accompanied an experienced pharmaceutical rep in the field for a day. Gained a unique perspective and working knowledge of the duties, challenges and daily life of a pharmaceutical rep. Solidified my desire to work in this challenging field.

Essentially, you're illustrating your willingness to research your career and determine if it's a good fit for you, and you're reiterating your interest and passion in pharmaceutical sales. This is exactly the mission of adding the ride-along experience to your resume.

If you want to know the questions you should ask on a ride-along that's part of the interview process, simply scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on the "pharmaceutical sales interview questions" category.
